She then moved to Almelo, Overijssel, where she worked for a farmer, and later to Apeldoorn, where she studied nutrition at the Jewish Het Apeldoornsche Bosch mental hospital. Chaja stayed there for two years, but on January 22, 1943, the Germans raided the hospital and deported the patients and many of the hospital staff to Auschwitz. Chaja managed to hide with Geritt and Anne Nijhoff* and their son Wilhelm and remained there until the end of 1943, when she was forced to flee. It was then that she met the Wien family in Wageningen, Gelderland, and started working for them as a maid, since Francisca Wien had five children and was not in good health. Her husband, Hendrikus, did not have a large income and so the family had a hard time financially. Chaja helped out with household chores and looked after the children in exchange for room and board. She was welcomed as a member of the family and, when the Allies bombed Wageningen in 1943, fled with the family to Zeist, Utrecht. Chaja stayed with the Wiens until mid-1944, when she joined the Westerweel* group, received false papers, and moved to Amsterdam to work for the Dutch underground. On November 1, 1979, Yad Vashem recognized Hendrikus Johannes Wien and his wife, Francisca Hendrika Wien-Huethorst, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
