In July of that year they were allowed to leave the camp thanks to the skills of the father, who worked in the diamond business. Their three-and-a-half-year-old son, Zadok, was extremely ill. Having gained their freedom, the parents lost no time looking for hiding places for their children. Through contact with Dr. Philip Fiedeldij-Dop*, a well-known pediatrician in Amsterdam, they found a home for Zadok with the van Enckevorts in Treebeek, Limburg, and for their daughter, Dorothea, a place with the van Hulst* family in Sneek, Friesland. Theo van Enckevort was active in the Resistance and the couple did not hesitate to take in the toddler, devotedly nursing him back to health and generally treating him as one of their own children while refusing any compensation during those difficult times. Zadok stayed in this warm and friendly household until the end of the war, when his parents came to pick him up. Relations between the two families remained warm after the war. In June 22, 1976, Yad Vashem recognized Theo van Enckevort and his wife, Gertrude van Enckevort-Bons, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
