At a certain point, they and their children were forced to hide. Uri, the youngest son, born in 1940, went into hiding with Cornelis (Cor) and Louisa (Wies) Drop in The Hague. Cor was foreman of a bakery and Wies was a housewife who looked after their two small children. They lived a simple, modest life and helped Jews out of love of their fellow man and ins opposition to the occupation. They took the two-year-old child into their home in October 1942 and he stayed with them until April 1944. Initially, the parents did not know where their son was being hidden, but a short time later Cor and Wies contacted them to tell them that their son was in a safe place. Uris parents paid a symbolic sum towards his upkeep. Cor and Wies looked after the boy well and he called them Mother and Father. Meanwhile, the underground was making plans: in June 1944 a group of children accompanied by adults, among them Uri, his brother, sister, and parents, crossed the border. In March 1945, Cor was betrayed and weapons were found during a search of his house. He was arrested and executed. Uris parents, Zvi and Ruth Dor, who moved to Kibbutz Hazora, maintained contact with Wies even after the war. On April 23 1968, Yad Vashem recognized Cornelis Drop and his wife, Louisa Maria Drop-Meyer, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
