In this capacity, he often had prior information about forthcoming German actions. Thus, on September 20, 1942, he knocked on the door of Nathan and Duifje Koppel, who were living in Arnhem with their five-year-old daughter, and insisted that the entire family go with him before they got rounded up by the Germans. The Koppels went with Hendrikus and that evening the Germans raided their home. The Koppels stayed with Hendrikus, a bachelor at the time, from September 20, 1942, until September 1944, when Arnhem was evacuated, at which point he organized another hideout for the fugitive family. Hendrikus acted out of strong anti-Nazi feelings and a belief that Jews in such desperate straits required his help. He never asked for financial compensation. In early 1945, the Germans arrested Hendrikus and he was transported to the Amersfoort detention camp. He was later moved to the Neuengamme concentration camp, from where the Allied forces liberated him. On November 28, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Hendrikus Arnoldus Borgardijn as Righteous Among the Nations. |
