Towards the end of 1943, the only refuge still available to him was Gerrit Boonstoppels farm in Overleek, also in the Monnickendam municipality. Gerrit constructed an excellent hideaway in a haystack in his yard, an occasionally illuminated space of 5 by 6 ft. in area where Emanuel stayed until the end of the war. Emanuel later remembered that Gerrit treated him lovingly while he was hidden there and his needs were always provided for. Initially, Emanuel paid a certain sum to Gerrit towards his upkeep but when he was no longer able to make the payments Gerrit continued with his hospitality, even getting angry whenever Emanuel mentioned money. Gerrit was a royalist who hated the German occupation and he was prepared to resist it in any way he could. In addition to hiding Emanuel during the war, Gerrit gave shelter to many other people being persecuted by the Germans. He also made his farm available for the LKPs training exercises. His stables were used as a shooting range. Gerrit also helped collect arms dropped by the Allies and was involved in the publication and distribution of Vrij Nederland. Emanuel also recalled that Resistance meetings were held among the haystacks in which he was hidden and that his small hideout was sometimes used as a storeroom for ammunition. During the war, Gerrit and Emanuel became firm friends, and they remained so afterwards. Gerrits mental health was severely affected by the ceaseless stress of his illegal wartime activities and after the war Stichting 40-45 recognized him as a Resistance fighter. Both men died in 1974. On January 21, 1999, Yad Vashem recognized Gerrit Boonstoppel as Righteous Among the Nations. |
