They immediately started looking for a hiding place for themselves and their four-year-old daughter, Hedwig Vera. The Boegborn family of Amsterdam offered to shelter the daughter and Julius and Irma also found shelter in Amsterdam. Johannes and Helena Boegborn lived with their two daughters, Leni and Miep. Their son, Theo, was married and lived away from home. The family lived in a small three-room apartment in the western section of Amsterdam, on a narrow street where there was very little privacy. Johannes was a carpenter. Leni and Miep both worked outside the home. No one outside the family knew about Veras presence. The young child was allowed to roam freely around the apartment, but not to go outside. She remained in the Boegborns home until the liberation on May 5, 1945. In August 1942, the Boegborns welcomed another Jew, 30-year-old Alex Troostwijk, into their home. He too stayed with the family until the liberation and he too was confined to the apartment. In February 1945, Veras mother was forced to leave her hideout after her hosts son was killed in an air raid. Johannes and Helena invited her to move in with them, despite the cramped conditions and serious lack of food. Fortunately, Theo, who was active in the Resistance, managed to arrange ration cards. The atmosphere in the Boegborns home was always pleasant. The Boegborns never asked for any remuneration. They acted purely out of human compassion. However, whenever possible, the Marcuses did contribute to the familys expenses. After the war, Bertha and Vera remained in touch with the Boegborn family. On May 6, 1996, Yad Vashem recognized Johannes Gerardus Boegborn and his wife, Helena Maria Wilhelmina Boegborn-Weesing, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
