The two couples became friends and remained in touch, even after Janny stopped working at the clinic. A few days after the German invasion, Janny visited Samuel and Mariana to see how they were. The next time she saw them was on July 13 1942, when she gave them the key to her house to use in times of need. Two days later, the Germans arrested large numbers of Jews in the south of Amsterdam and the Vreedenburgs decided to flee. They handed their young son over to their housekeeper, who took him to a family in Drenthe, and Samuel and Mariana went to the Bloms. Neither Mrs. Blom nor her husband hesitated. They said: You are staying here, wrote Mariana. What was meant to be a stay of just a single night turned into three hard years of living in hiding in a small room at the Bloms, from July 1942 until the liberation in May 1945. This was a very difficult time for the Bloms, and Janny in particular, since she had to make sure her little son did not discover the secret and tell the neighbors. Getting a hold of double the amount of food without arousing suspicion was also difficult. Things got so bad that Janny brought in her mother, Mrs. Steenhagen, to help her and watch her grandson and would even sometimes ride hundreds of kilometers on her bicycle to villages to get food for everyone. Thanks to the Bloms courage, the Vreedenburgs were saved, and reunited with their son at the end of the war. On March 7, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Mijndert Blom and his wife, Janny Blom, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
