One of those who refused was Klaas Berga of Opende, Friesland, who was punished for his noncompliance by deportation to the Vught concentration camp, where he spent a year before being transferred to Germany for hard labor. Shortly after Germany surrendered, he was repatriated. Police sergeant Dirk Boonstra*, who had initiated the collective refusal, perished in Dachau. On November 14, 1988, Yad Vashem recognized Klaas Berga as Righteous Among the Nations. |
