Before they were transported to the camps, the couple reached an agreement with Levies brother, A. Gobes, and his wife that after the war the surviving couple would adopt the other couples children. Reverend Johannes took Ronnie to the home of Lodewijk and Willemke Blankenzee, a childless middle-aged couple living in Edam, North Holland. The Resistance issued a fake adoption certificate in which Ronnie was identified as an orphan named Gerrit van Wageningen. This became Ronnies alias during the war, though the Blankenzees still put themselves at considerable risk as they were no longer young and thus attracted unwanted attention when they appeared with the baby in public. When the Allied forces attacked the nearby coast, the Blankenzees fled for their lives in the middle of the night. With Ronnie in his baby carriage, they rushed to the harbor and paid a great deal of money to cross the Ijsselmeer on a fishermans boat, after which they went to the home of Willemkes sister in Friesland. By the end of the war, Ronnie had become so attached to his devoted foster parents that when his uncle, A. Gobes, came to collect him to keep his promise to his deceased brother, the boy ran away to be reunited with his rescuers. In 1963, he was legally adopted as Gerrit Blankenzee, but much later he assumed his original name. On August 8, 1999, Yad Vashem recognized Lodewijk Matthijs Blankenzee and his wife, Willemke Blankenzee-Winkler, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
