The Blankens, who lived about a seven-minute walk from the station, had 13 children but nonetheless welcomed five fugitives into their home. At their home, the new arrivals, inevitably needing to recuperate from their anxiety-laden train journey, were welcomed with a cup of coffee and Drenthe spice cake. Klaas and Alberta were always supportive and deeply involved in the rescue efforts of the Resistance. On June 9, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Klaas Blanken and his wife, Alberta Blanken-Stoit, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
