They had to go into hiding and found refuge with Geertruida van Gessel and her daughter Alie in Dieren, Gelderland. However, after about a year at the van Gessels home, they had to leave because friends in the underground were arrested and they were afraid that their whereabouts could be revealed. Alie and her fiancé, Tieme Beuving, accompanied Betty and Diny to another hideout, the farm of the Garben* family in the village of Azewijn, where their brother Harry was already hidden. The journey to the farm was fraught with danger ---it was a 25-kilometer trip taken through the night that involved crossing a bridge over the IJssel River that was heavily guarded by German soldiers. With Alie in front, the sisters behind on the wings, and Tieme holding up the rear, they arrived safely at the Garbens farm. In addition to hiding and helping the Straus sisters, Geertruida, with the help of Alie and Tieme, were involved in assisting many other Jews. Over the course of the war, they escorted fugitives from one hideout to another, provided food for people hidden in the woods, and tried to convince Jews to go into hiding. They also provided refuge for Allied pilots shot down over east Holland. On September 21, 1978, Yad Vashem recognized Geertruida Maria van Gessel-Karreman, Tieme Beuving and Alie Beuving-van Gessel as Righteous Among the Nations. |
