During the time they worked together the two women had developed a close friendship and consequently the van Beeks later offered to hide Jeannettes mother, 62-year-old Esther Asch-Hart, in their home. Esther hid with them from February 3, 1943, until the liberation on May 5, 1945. Throughout Esthers time in hiding, the van Beeks did everything possible to create a pleasant atmosphere for her and to provide her with food and clothing. On November 29, 1979, Yad Vashem recognized Gerrit van Beek, his wife, Anneta Louisa van Beek-Weede, and their daughter, Jannetje Louisa van Beek, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
