They themselves hid the brothers Alex and Bernard Groenhijm in their home for a long time during the war, preparing a secret place for them to hide in. The Groenhijm brothers were the only ones in their family to survive the war. Willem and Johanna also saved the life of their neighbor, Mr. Frankenhuis, by warning him in advance of a search and thereby giving him enough time to hide. In addition, the ter Beeks took care of Jewish youths from the “Heimerses” Hachshara House in Twekkelo who, unfortunately, were later arrested and deported. On November 20, 1980, Yad Vashem recognized Willem ter Beek and his wife, Johanna Ludowika Bernardina ter Beek-Stahl, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
