He went out to search for Jews who needed hiding places and escorted them to his parents home, where they stayed for varying lengths of time. His parents and sister Agnes (later Vloet) took care of the fugitives. Among the people they hid were Fritz and Alice Roos and their two children, Bernd and Anita, from Wupperthal, Germany. The van Bebbers also hid the Rooses cousin Hans Badmann. They hid with the van Bebbers from August 15, 1943, until August 2, 1944, when the Germans came to the van Bebbers home and arrested Jeff, the Roos family, and some other Jews hidden there. Jeff was executed on August 11, 1944. The Jews were all deported and Anita Roos was the only one to survive the war. Wilhelmus and Anna Maria died after the war. On January 28, 1982, Yad Vashem recognized Wilhelmus Theodorus van Bebber, his wife, Anna Maria van Bebber-Luescher, and their children, Joseph Andreas Joannes Maria van Bebber and Agnes Apollonia Maria Antonia Vloet-van Bebber, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
