Liny was sent to a prestigious high school in the city where she met and befriended Senta Goverts (later Baudet), a non-Jewish classmate. When the Germans invaded the Netherlands and started to implement their antisemitic laws, Sentas friendship with Liny was strengthened rather than broken. When the deportations began in July 1942, Liny, her mother, and her sister decided to attempt to escape from Holland to Vichy France. However, to do so they needed false identity cards. When Liny approached Senta and asked her for her identity card Senta gave it to her and with this document Liny would be able to remove her yellow star. On the Dutch side of the border the three women stayed with a farmers family until a change in the German border patrol made it possible for them to dart across into Belgium. Since Liny would no longer require Sentas identity card, she gave it to the farmer and asked him to return it to her in The Hague, although Senta had specifically said that this was not necessary. On the train on the way to The Hague, the German police inspected the nervous farmer. They discovered the extra card and as a consequence both he and Senta were arrested and brutally interrogated. Neither of them disclosed any information; Senta insisted that the card had been stolen from her. After nine days, she was released. On July 12, 1990, Yad Vashem recognized Senta Bernardina Johanna Baudet-Goverts as Righteous Among the Nations. |
