Jan was involved in an enormous volume of illegal activity. He used so many different aliases that most of the people he rescued never knew his real identity. One person who did know his real name was Mrs. E. Lausser-Vaz Diaz of Amsterdam. She stayed temporarily with Miekes mother, Mrs. Langveld, in Laren, North Holland, before being given her own little cottage, hidden by trees, where she remained until the end of the war. After the war, many people testified that Jan, disguised as a policeman, helped rescue a group of children from the Hollandsche Schouwburg in Amsterdam and deliver them to safe hideouts. During the war, Jan also made serious attempts to rescue Justus (Ted) Marchand (a Jewish member of Herman Troeders organization), whom he had worked with until September 1943, when the Germans apprehended him. Marchand had been wounded and was hospitalized in the city of Utrecht by his captors. However, the room was so well guarded that Jan could not get him out. Jan and Mieke must have helped hundreds of Jews before Jan was stopped for a routine check on his way to a safe house. He instinctively ran, but because he suffered from lung problems he did not get far before being caught. Jan and Mieke were both sent to the Vught concentration camp, where they were reunited with Justus Marchand. On January 1, 1981, Yad Vashem recognized Jan Bartelsman and his wife, Marie-Henriëtte Bartelsman-Langveld, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
