A widow since 1934, Therese Barkhuijsen was living with her three adult children when Jews were being rounded up en masse in the summer of 1942. A friend of her son Rudolf, who was married to a Jewish woman, asked whether Rudolf would be willing to hide his 71-year-old Jewish mother-in-law, Henriëtte de Groot-Heijmans. Rudolf Barkhuijsen asked his mother, who agreed to take her in. Despite the cramped conditions Henriëtte was given a small room of her own. She remained there for three years, even when Herbert, another son of Thereses got married and his new wife moved into the family home. Other than the immediate family, nobody was aware of the presence of Henriëtte. Guests were never invited over and if someone came she would go to her room. In case of emergency she was instructed to say she was an aunt who had been evacuated from the coast. In the fall of 1944 two German soldiers came looking for men for forced labor in Germany. Herbert hid in a cupboard, where he remained undiscovered. Henriëtte sat knitting in the living room and was not even noticed. During the difficult hunger winter of 1944--1945 Herberts wife often traveled on her bicycle to distant farms in order to obtain food. After the war Henriëtte and Therese maintained a warm relationship. On May 27, 1997, Yad Vashem recognized Therese Barkhuijsen-Wolter and her son, Herbert F. Barkhuijsen, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
