He was also one of the editors of the illegal newsletter Rattenkruid, which advocated a militant line against the German occupier. Leendert had been enlisted by the newsletter staff through social connections. His fiancée was a resistance worker and Leendert was consistently a good source of ration cards to distribute among the Jews in hiding. Leendert also supplied the resistance with a pistol that was used on several occasions. Leendert was also involved in the attack on the municipal population registration office in Amsterdam on March 27, 1943. After this, he was arrested, along with the rest of the resistance group, tried, and sentenced to death on June 18. He was executed on July 1, 1943. The group that carried out this daring attack on the municipal population registration office was honored posthumously by the Queen of the Netherlands and awarded the Resistance Memorial Cross in 1984. On June 19, 1986, Yad Vashem recognized Cornelis Leendert Barentsen as Righteous Among the Nations. |
