The officer offered to accompany them and their 13-year-old daughter Erika to safety. He delivered them to Dingeman and Jannetje Coumou* who were already sheltering many other Jews. They stayed there until they were taken to the Reverend Pieter Barends and his mother, Johanna. They had also helped other Jews, many of whom did not survive the war. The Hollaenders stayed with Johanna and Pieter for 18 months, but returned to the Coumous whenever danger loomed. In September 1944, one of Pieters brothers was murdered by the Germans and in the interest of safety the Hollaenders were moved to the Stroomenbergh* family. The young police officer who had helped save the Hollaenders lives was later shot by the Germans while trying to rescue some underground workers. On July 15, 1975, Yad Vashem recognized Pieter Johann Susan Barends and his mother, Johanna Elisabeth Barends-Simoons, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
