Rescue Story
Balder, Jacob & Grietje (Schaap)
Jacob Balder was a carpenter and member of the LO and also of the Protestant undergound "Groep 2000" group and the OD. He and his wife Grietje lived in Broek op Langedijk, North Holland. Because of the secrecy surrounding his activities many of his deeds are unknown. He participated in attacks on the local distribution office, the office of population registration, and the corn market at Wieringermeer. He also hid downed Allied pilots and arranged their return to England. Jacob became regional leader of the LO after the arrest of the previous leader and played a large part in the rescue of Jews. He and his wife hid a Jewish couple from Utrecht and at least five Jewish children at the same time. Over the years dozens of Jews passed through their home, some of them for short periods until a permanent hiding place was found and some of them for longer periods until the liberation. Grietje did not only bear the burden of looking after her home and large family, she also accompanied Jews---adults and children---from their homes to hers or to other hiding places. On June 23, 1944, Jacob was arrested when the SD police broke into their house. His two eldest daughters (aged 16 and 18) were also arrested but were later released. Jacob was executed on July 14, 1944, and is buried at a special honorary cemetery in Bloemendaal.
On September 7, 1977, Yad Vashem recognized Jacob Balder and his wife, Grietje Balder-Schaap, as Righteous Among the Nations.
