They were members of the local underground and helped organize hiding places for Jews in the area. The village post office was actually inside their home and they used it as a cover for their activities despite the fact that the Germans came into the post office from time to time. They constantly lived in fear that they would be discovered or reported to the Germans by collaborators. What put Berend and Jeltje most at risk was the hiding of a 14-month-old Jewish boy named Harry L. Davids. The infant was handed over to the underground by his parents when he was three months old and moved from place to place until Jeltje picked him up in Dokkum. Berend and Jeltje, who were not wealthy, already had a son and three daughters. Only the eldest daughter knew the truth about the baby. To the Germans, the whole family stubbornly insisted that he was their fifth child, and that was how they treated him. Jeltje took the sick child from doctor to doctor and even had to bring him to a specialist in the town of Groningen. As Harry grew up his presence endangered the family even more: the village gossips were always talking about the Jewish boy at the Bakker house. On August 17, 1987, Yad Vashem recognized Berend Philip Bakker and his wife, Jeltje Bakker-Woudsma, as Righteous Among the Nations |
