Roza, who was born in Breda and suffered from asthma, was brought to the Baars family by the underground. She went to school and was treated as though she were Christian. The Baarses, devout Catholics, looked after Roza as if she were their daughter, acting out of pure religious and humanistic motives without any reward. The girlÂ’s parents and brother perished during the war and after hostilities ended, she remained with the Baarses. When Roza was 20, she decided to return to Judaism, and, in 1957 left the family and immigrated to Israel. She maintained close contact with her rescuers. On September 21, 1976, Yad Vashem recognized Johannes Augustinus Baars and his wife, Johanna Agnes Maria Philomena Baars-van Dijk, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
