As such, she saved Jews from persecution. This information is based on the testimony of Arnold Douwes*, the initiator and indefatigable organizer of the project for hiding Jews in the area, and Nico (Max LĂ©ons), a young Jew from Voorburg, South Holland, who was his faithful assistant. Between 1943 and 1945, Douwes kept a diary in which he mentioned Attje among the people who helped Jews. On June 9, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Attje Aardema as Righteous Among the Nations |
