Gelderland), were asked by a local underground worker to hide 16-year-old Maurice Gosschalk from The Hague in their home. Gosschalk who had been in various places in hiding until then, had to leave his last address as a result of intense house searches in those areas. The Ariënses agreed, fully realizing the risk to their young family. They had three very young children and Margaretha was pregnant with their fourth child. Cornelis was a bargeman, but because of the lack of fuel he had no work at the time Maurice arrived. Even so, Maurice was accepted in the household and was treated very warmly. He helped out in the house and the vegetable garden with Cornelis. At night he slept in the attic for security reasons. The Ariënses farm was located along the river Waal, frequently used by the Germans to transport goods to Germany, which increased the danger of discovery. The Ariënses received food stamps from the local underground in order to help cover their extra expenses. Maurice stayed with the Ariënses until the liberation of that part of Holland in September 1944. After the liberation of the whole of the Netherlands in May 1945, Maurice returned to his parents, who had survived. Contact with his rescuers was renewed some ten years later and continued regularly thereafter. On May 7, 2001, Yad Vashem recognized Cornelis Marinus Ariëns and Margaretha Johanna Petronella Ariëns de Groen, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
