Daughter Lies was studying at the University of Leiden, where she was friends with a Jewish fellow student, Albertine (Tini) Sanders. With the onset of the deportations of the Jews in the summer of 1942, Tini discussed the terrible situation with Elisabeth, asking whether she knew people who would be willing to take the risk of hiding Jews. Lies asked her parents, who decided not to look further and opened their home for Tini’s parents, Heiman and Rosa Sanders (née Polak). Tini then managed to find a hiding address for herself and her younger brother with the Oudejans* family in Spierdijk. The Andriessens lived in an apartment building in the city, so that the utmost caution was needed. The Sanders couple never left the home during their entire stay with the Andriessens, a total of some two and a half years. No one was to know of their presence. Heiman Sanders kept busy by studying Russian grammar and reading Greek classics from the Andriessens’ home library. Rosa helped out with household chores. Even though the apartment was small, a special hiding area was prepared for them. This proved itself twice during their stay. Once in March 1943, when two Dutch policemen entered the home, questioning the uncle’s loss of an identity card, and asking to see all ID’s. Again, at the end of 1944, Germans came to look for men who were dodging forced labor. In neither case were the Sanderses discovered. The Andriessens took care of all of the Sanderses’ needs and the relations between them remained good during the entire period. Especially during the infamous Hungerwinter of 1944-1945, when hardly any food and no fuel were available in the still-occupied west of the country, the Andriessens made supreme efforts to feed all. Daughter Lies went on treks in search of food. The Sanderses were able to contribute toward the basic purchases, much of which had to be bought on the black market for high prices. At the beginning of 1945, the Allies bombed by mistake the area where the Andriessens lived, while they were trying to hit German V1 and V2 rocket launch sites. The home was seriously damaged, but no one was hurt. The Andriessens were evacuated but could not take the Sanderses with them. Instead a place was found for them with friends nearby, where they stayed until the liberation of the area in May 1945. Relations between the Andriessens and the Sanderses stayed close after the war. On September 23, 2001, Yad Vashem recognized Adrianus Willem Andriessen and Elisabeth Maria Andriessen, as Righteous Among the Nations.
