It was May 1943 and he went into hiding in the home of some family friends, the Amsinghs, who lived in Amsterdam. The Amsinghs looked after Maurits and attended to all his needs. They obtained ration cards and false identity papers for him, as well as for a number of other Jews and non-Jews. Maurits lived with the Amsinghs until November 1943, when he concluded that his presence in their home was endangering their lives too much. Eventually, he was liberated in Heerlen in September 1944. After the war, Maurits married the Amsinghs daughter. During the war Judith Zilverberg-Roeper, aged 41 at the time, also enjoyed the safety of the Amsinghs home for a period of three months. The Amsingh family never received any payment for the help they provided. They were motivated purely by humanitarian considerations. On March 17, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Gerard Arnault Paul Felix Amsingh and his wife, Johanna Maria Amsingh-Petersen, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
