As Jewish deportations to the east gained momentum in 1942, the cantor of Enschede, Overijssel, Philip de Groot, his wife Judith and their three children, nine-year-old Moshe-Mordechai, Miriam, seven, and seven-month old Menachem, were urged by friends to go into hiding. With the help of the Reverend Leendert Overduin*, each family member was placed in a different hiding place.
Menachem was sent to live with Jan Althuis, a teacher in Enschede, and his wife, Anna. They took excellent care of him for almost three years, making him part of the family and never requesting payment. After the war, the de Groot family was reunited and immigrated to Israel, where Menachem became a pilot in the Israel Defense Forces.
On July 10, 1973, Yad Vashem recognized Jan Althuis and his wife, Anna Althuis, as Righteous Among the Nations.
