In October 1942, the van Cleeff family of Rotterdam was forced to go into hiding and their neighbor, Arij van der Meer*, arranged hideouts for the entire family. The eldest daughter, Liesl, aged 11, was taken to the Klaarhamers in Soest, Utrecht. In 1944, Liesl was betrayed by a Dutch woman and sent to Westerbork. While she was there, van der Meer managed to provide Liesl and her sister, who had also been caught and imprisoned in the same camp, with baptism certificates that ultimately saved their lives. Alida Klaarhamer was also arrested and sent to a prison in Amsterdam, from where she returned alive.
On October 22, 1980, Yad Vashem recognized Cornelis Gerrit Klaarhamer and his wife, Alida Clasina Klaarhamer-van Delden, as Righteous Among the Nations |
