The Doeles hid a Jewish girl named Carolina Selina Hoogstraal in their home in Hemrik, Friesland. Carolina had previously been hiding in the town of Drachten but had been forced to leave. When she arrived at Halbe and Grietje’s home in April 1944 she was ten years old. Halbe and Grietje and their two small sons had first lived in Heerenveen, a fairly large rural town. Halbe worked in the Office of Youth Registration, which belonged to the Heerenveen Municipality. In 1941, another official was chosen to replace him, apparently because he cooperated with the occupying power, and so the family moved to Hemrik, a small village, where Halbe worked as an insurance agent. The couple’s financial situation was not good. Grietje made Carolina a dress from Indian cloth that she had from before the war. From time to time members of the underground came to visit to make sure everything was all right. Carolina stayed with the Doeles until the end of the summer of 1945 and then was taken to her aunt in Amsterdam. This was a short time before the Doeles moved to Leeuwarden. Carolina kept in close touch with the Doeles even after she immigrated to Israel. During the war, Halbe Doele helped the underground immensely. In the last months of the war, he made copies of the underground De Steinnen Man leaflets in his home. The Doeles also hid a Jewish boy for a few days as well as members of the underground who needed to be hidden. After the liberation, Halbe was appointed to the Information Office of the Military Regime in Friesland. Following that, he worked at the Volkshogeschool University in Terschelling.
On May 3, 1989, Yad Vashem recognized Halbe Doele and his wife, Grietje Doele-Bokma, as Righteous Among the Nations.
