Leen's brother, Piet Eland, then took Sophia and Maurits to his sister and brother-in law, Neeltje and Jan van der Hoek-Eland, a young couple with a baby daughter living in Zwartewaal, South Holland. In spring 1944, Sophia became seriously ill with cancer. Neeltje and Jan nursed her as best they could but her condition worsened and she required hospitalization. She was taken to a Rotterdam hospital, but the management refused to keep her due to her lack of appropriate documentation. She admitted that she was Jewish and had no documents and she was sent away. Jan and Neeltje took her home but she once again needed hospital treatment. This time, the LO succeeded in arranging a card for her and she was looked after in the Diaconessen Hospital in Rotterdam until her death. Neeltje took Maurits from his new hiding place with the Hoogvliets* in Rockanje to visit his mother in the hospital twice, a dangerous journey, because the Germans patrolled the Spijkenisse bridge, which was on their route. Sophia died in June 1944 and was buried in Portugaal, a village near Rotterdam. After the liberation she was reinterred in the Rotterdam Jewish cemetery. On June 29, 1995, Yad Vashem recognized Jan van der Hoek and his wife, Neeltje van der Hoek-Eland, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
