The HielkemasÂ’ house in Leeuwarden, Friesland, served as a transit point for Jews on their way to more permanent hiding places. Elly Monas (later Ilana Polak) was the first to stay with Thiemen and Emmy Hielkema. She came from Amsterdam and had hidden initially in Oldenmark, Overijssel, but when that became too dangerous, Thiemen came to get her and took her to his house. From there, she was moved to the de Vries* family, who sheltered her for two years without any financial remuneration. During the latter part of the war, the Hielkemas provided food coupons and other illegal items to those in hiding.
On June 26, 1980, Yad Vashem recognized Thiemen Hielkema and his wife, Emmy Hielkema-Giezen, as Righteous Among the Nations.
