Aantekeningen: | Last Name: Heinen First Name: Hendrika Harmina Maiden Name: Rots Rescuer's fate: survived Nationality: THE NETHERLANDS Gender: Female Place during the war: Aalten, Gelderland, The Netherlands Rescue Place: Aalten, Gelderland, The Netherlands Rescue mode: Hiding File number: File from the Collection of the Righteous Among the Nations Department (M.31.2/2276) When Hendrika Heinens husband died in 1934, she was left with three children all aged under eight. Her husband had been a mailman and she raised her children on the meager widows pension she received. Notwithstanding her difficulties, when the Resistance approached her in 1942 and asked her to hide a nine-year-old Jewish girl, she agreed immediately. On September 20, Anita Waisvisz came to Hendrikas home in Aalten, Gelderland. She stayed for four and a half years, also some time after the liberation, as her parents did not survive the war. During this time, she was treated like a member of the family. She was closest in age to the youngest of the children, Annie, and attended elementary school with her. Food was not lacking and the atmosphere in the home was always optimistic despite the surrounding circumstances. In addition to Anita, Hendrika also hid two young Dutch men who were evading forced labor in Germany. There were many hidden people in this area and, on Sundays, 30 to 40 of them attended church. Anita went with her foster family. In the last 18 months of the war, the Germans intensified their reign of terror in the area, searching the houses several times and billeting soldiers with local families. Hendrika had to give up one of the rooms in her house to two German soldiers but she never considered allowing Anita to relocate despite her Jewish appearance. Hendrika never received any financial support. She was always loving and friendly towards Anita and remained a role model for the child in her adult life. In April 1947, Anita was handed over to the care of a Jewish organization and she later immigrated to Israel. On May 3, 1982, Yad Vashem recognized Hendrika Harmina Heinen-Rots as Righteous Among the Nations. |
