In March 1943, they were offered a hiding place with Carel and Maartje van Hartingsveldt in Alkmaar, North Holland. The Lebrams stayed there until the end of the war. Through their intercession, the van Hartingsveldts also took in another German Jewish woman, Margot Lesser (later Lenz), who joined them in the hideout in July 1943 and stayed until May 1945. During the course of the war, Carel and Maartje gave much needed moral support to their guests, especially during periods of hunger, cold, and at times escalating danger. Carel constructed a special hiding place in which the three fugitives hid during Gestapo house searches, of which there were several. The hiding place was dug under the floor of the house, with only a small air hole visible. Through this hole, the fugitives could see Gestapo boots stamping over their heads, but they were never discovered. After the war, the two daughters born to Herbert and Ursula considered Carel and Maartje their grandparents. On May 21, 1975, Yad Vashem recognized Carel van Hartingsveldt and his wife, Maartje van Hartingsveldt-de Waal, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
