Aantekeningen: | Last Name: Groenhart First Name: Bep Rescuer's fate: survived Nationality: THE NETHERLANDS Gender: Female Place during the war: Amsterdam, Noordholland, The Netherlands Rescue Place: Amsterdam, Noordholland, The Netherlands Rescue mode: Hiding Other File number: File from the Collection of the Righteous Among the Nations Department (M.31.2/3691) In early 1940, Mina Swaab, a young Jewish woman, rented a room at Thorbeckeplein, a boarding house run by Dirk and Marie Vreeswijk in Amsterdam. When the time came for Minas brother, Harry Swaab, to go into hiding, Mina contacted her non-Jewish friend Bep Groenhart and asked for help. Bep suggested that Harry first spend a fortnight at her family home in Amsterdam, where several people were already hiding. This apartment was a typical temporary address where fugitives stayed for various lengths of time while the Resistance was organizing permanent hideouts. From there, Harry joined his sister at the Vreeswijks. Twenty-two-year-old Bep was deeply involved in the Resistance. In addition to finding people shelter in and around Amsterdam, she also accompanied people to their hiding places, acted as a courier for the Resistance, provided people with contacts, and distributed food coupons. Bep continuously risked her own life to rescue others. After the war, Bep married a brother of Mina and Harry Swaab. On July 9, 1987, Yad Vashem recognized Bep B. Groenhart as Righteous Among the Nations. |
