Overijssel), near the German border, many Jews were rescued under the guidance of the Protestant minister, Reverend Overduin*. He contacted Gerrit Jan Goris, a house painter, and his wife, Elisabeth, a housewife, to hide the Goldsteins, a family of German-Jewish origin. The Goris couple had five young children under the age of seven, but nevertheless had the courage to hide father, mother, and 11-year-old daughter who fled from the Kristallnacht pogrom of November 9-10, 1938 in Germany. They had plans to immigrate to the U.S., but were not able to carry them out in time. Through connections the Goldsteins had in the Netherlands with the father's sister, they were put into contact with the Rev. Overduin. His organization found them a place to hide and also supplied them with money and food coupons throughout the war period. Six months after the Goldsteins arrived at the Goris family's very modest house another Jewish family was also taken in, the Zegerius family of Amsterdam. Altogether, the Goldsteins hid with the Goris family for two and a half years, and the Zegerius family for almost two years. In spite of the very difficult circumstances, the Goris family was always kind towards their charges. The danger was compounded because Dutch Nazi party members lived across the street. Towards the end of the war, Mr. Goldstein passed away and his body had to be secretly buried at the nearby Van Heek estate. As a result of all his efforts on behalf of his Jewish fellow-men and all the tensions involved, Gerrit Jan Goris developed lung problems and had to stop working in 1952, when he was still in the prime of life. On March 30, 2000, Yad Vashem recognized Gerrit Jan Goris and Elisabeth Goris-Alfring, as Righteous Among the Nations.
