In 1942, when Arieh Reindorp was only two years old, his parents were forced to seek refuge for him. Arieh was separated from his family and taken by Wijtse Raven*, an underground contact, to the home of Gerard and Cornelia Giltay, in Arnhem (Gelderland). Gerard and Cornelia, who also had a 14-year-old son living at home, often took the baby to play in the garden of their neighbor, the Peters-van Nijenhof family*, with whom Arieh’s parents had found shelter. This arrangement allowed Mr. and Mrs. Reindorp to see their child. When the Giltay’s home became suspect, and therefore no longer safe, Wijtse Raven transferred Arieh to a new location. Subsequently, Arieh was moved several times and after awhile the situation was such that the child was left without a roof over his head. When Cornelia discovered this, she tracked him down with the help of Wijtse and took him back into her home. Even after Arieh had returned to the Giltay’s protection, there were several occasions when Arieh faced discovery and was forced to move out temporarily.
On March 31, 1981, Yad Vashem recognized Gerardus Giltay and his wife, Cornelia Giltay-van Dongen, as Righteous Among the Nations.
