Aantekeningen: | Last Name: Flipse First Name: Cornelis Date of Birth: 10/12/1918 Rescuer's fate: survived Nationality: THE NETHERLANDS Gender: Male Place during the war: Zaandam, Noordholland, The Netherlands Rescue Place: Zaandam, Noordholland, The Netherlands Rescue mode: Hiding File number: File from the Collection of the Righteous Among the Nations Department (M.31.2/2280) Leo and Gerarda Zeldenrust lived with their three-year-old daughter, Ellie, in Koog aan de Zaan, North Holland. Leo worked for Polak and Schwartz and Cornelis Flipse, recently married to Cornelia and living in nearby Zaandam, was one of his colleagues. In 1942, when the persecution of the Jews intensified, the Zeldenrusts left their home and moved to Amsterdam, where they stayed for a while with Gerardas brother, Naftali de Rosa, and his wife, Ali. For some time, Leo kept working in Zaandam because he was able to obtain a permit to use the train between Amsterdam and his workplace. However, when this privilege was taken away from him, Cornelis offered to hide Leos family in his own home. Leo accepted the offer, but initially only for himself, sending Gerarda and Ellie from one address to another. Their last hiding place was in Delft, South Holland. In July 1943, Cornelis traveled on his own initiative to Delft and brought Leos wife and daughter back to Zaandam. Once the Zeldenrust family was reunited, they were given a bedroom for the three of them to live in and became part of the household. Soon after, Gerardas uncle joined them in this refuge. They all remained there until the liberation on May 5, 1945. During the war, Cornelis also took care of the de Rosa family. He found a safe hiding address for them and provided them with food coupons and sometimes food. The Flipses persisted in their efforts without receiving any financial reward. They only received money towards their daily expenses. Over the course of the war, the Flipses rescued six Jews at enormous risk to their own lives. After the liberation of Holland, the Zeldenrusts kept in close touch with Cornelis and Cornelia. On May 3, 1982, Yad Vashem recognized Cornelis Flipse and his wife, Cornelia Flipse-de Koning, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
