She owned an estate called Slingevliet in Doetinchem, Gelderland, which was situated in a large walled garden that separated the house from the surrounding area. Here Catharina, a teacher, hid nine Jews, among them four children who called her Tante Toos and were allowed to play in her garden as often as they liked. In her testimony to Yad Vashem, Mrs. van Baer-Parfumeur wrote that she was the first to arrive at Catharinas home on July 30, 1942, and stayed there until November 2, 1943. Maurits Isidor Berendson, a Jewish child who hid on the estate with his mother, later recalled a happy childhood and pleasant memories. The house and its occupants did occasionally arouse suspicion in the area. Once, someone came to look into the identity of the occupants but Catharina, who was cool-headed and never taken by surprise, made up a story to explain the presence of each of the occupants. Mrs. van Baer testified that those in hiding paid a very reasonable sum of money for food and lodging. During the course of the war, Catharina also hid fugitive non-Jews for short periods of time, such as a boy who fled forced labor in Germany, a doctor during a doctors strike, an underground activist and others. Toward the end of the war, the Germans seized the estate and Maurits and his mother were moved to another hiding place. On September 13, 1979, Yad Vashem recognized Catharina Wilhelmina Diederika Ernste-Glazener as Righteous Among the Nations. |
