When the deportations began the boys were hidden at the Joodsche Invalide Hospital, under the pretense that they were suffering from a contagious disease. From there they were kidnapped by members of the Amsterdam Student Group* and hidden at various addresses. In September 1943, some students brought five-year-old Michel and six-year-old Freddie to the home of Johanna Dolleman in Amsterdam. Aunt Johanna cared for the two boys with much love and devotion. Six weeks after the arrival of the boys, Johannas husband, Philip Dolleman, died, but she continued to dedicate herself to her Jewish foster children, reading them stories and providing them with an education, including violin lessons. Johanna also made sure that the boys corresponded with their mother, who was hiding elsewhere in Amsterdam. Johannas brother, Eric Everard, was a Resistance activist and the German authorities often came looking for him at her home. Her parents were vehemently opposed to the Nazi regime and gave wholehearted support to their daughters efforts to rescue the two boys. After the war, Johanna remarried and had two children. She was convinced that the birth of her two sons was a divine reward for her wartime deeds. On January 21, 1999, Yad Vashem recognized Johanna Bosch van Drakestein-Dolleman-Everard as Righteous Among the Nations. |
