In April 1943, then aged 14, Rosel had to go into hiding. A member of the Resistance took her to Zeist, Utrecht, to the home of Christian and Harmina de Bruyn, whom she called Uncle Chris and Aunt Mien. When Rosel arrived at the de Bruyns', they were already sheltering a Jewish couple and five Jewish children. Christian and Harmina hid all these charges until June 1943. Christian was employed in a laundry and he and his wife had five children. They were devout Dutch Calvinists and were motivated to help Jews by a feeling of human compassion towards their persecuted compatriots. They were kind to all their charges and never ceased to support and encourage them. They thought it was very important for Rosel to learn a vocation, so they arranged for her to train to become a seamstress while in hiding. Rosel was the only person hiding with the de Bruyns who was allowed to leave the house, because she was blonde. The Resistance covered the cost of maintaining the hidden people. On June 1, 1943, the Gestapo raided the de Bruyns' home and the hidden Jews were apprehended. Rosel was not there at the time and was therefore not caught. She was sent to another address. Christian was imprisoned in Amsterdam for three months and then sent to Vught, from where he was released in December 1943 due to ill health. As a result of torture, he became 80 percent disabled and the Stichting (Foundation) 1940--1945 confirmed his disability after the war. In 1965, Harmina visited Rosel (by then Vardit Meir) in Israel. Rosel had invited her wartime savior to visit her in order to express her gratitude for her courageous deeds. On November 16, 1965, Yad Vashem recognized Christian Frederic de Bruyn and his wife, Harmina de Bruyn-Geerling, as Righteous Among the Nations.
