He offered to accompany them and their 13-year-old daughter, Erika, to a safe hiding place. Thus, they arrived at the home of Dingeman and Jannetje Coumou. The Coumous were already hiding many other Jews and so the new arrivals were only afforded shelter with them until a permanent hideout could be found. Before long, the Hollaenders were transferred to the Barendses* and then later to the Stroomenbergh* family. On several occasions, the Hollaenders returned temporarily to the Coumous when they were in danger of being discovered in their hideout. Unfortunately, most of the Jews hidden by the Coumous did not survive the war. The Germans shot the young police officer who warned the Hollaenders just in time to save them while he was trying to rescue some underground workers. On July 15, 1975, Yad Vashem recognized Dingeman Jozias Coumou and his wife, Jannetje Coumou-van Vooren, as Righteous Among the Nations.
