He often hid Jews in his home until Arnold Douwes* found them a permanent address. Jan also delivered messages between the Jews hidden in different hideouts across the village and often warned the hosts when a raid was expected. Miriam Wortman-de Raay and her mother stayed with Jan and Arendina for only a few days. Lou Gans, a teenager, remained in their home for a longer period of time. Lou had become extremely nervous and lonely after the atrocities visited upon his family in Amsterdam. Jan and Arendina treated him very well and succeeded in calming him down. On several occasions, in times of acute danger, Lou was sent to Jans neighbor, his sister-in-law, Jantina Zwiers*. On one occasion, the danger was so great that Jan helped Lou dig a pit in the forest, in which Lou hid for several weeks. While hidden there, Jan brought him food every day. On August 15, 1974, Yad Vashem recognized Jan Dekker and his wife, Arendina Dekker, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
