Rescue Story
Bos van den, Wieger
From May 1943 on, a large part of the local population in the three villages of Ureterp, Wijnjeterp, and Olterterp, all in the southeastern corner of Friesland, in the Opsterland region, near Drachten, was involved in helping Jews. The people arranged food supplies, provided money and ration coupons, and found hiding places for fugitive adults, children, and infants. One of the key figures in these activities was Wieger van den Bos. He personally hid Dutch Resistance workers in his home, cooperated with Aalzen de Jager* and Alle van der Draai* and rescued, among others, Robert Sixma, Saartje Korttoef, and Gerda Weijl-van der Stam and her sons. Because of his central role in assisting people, many were able to recall his actions after the war. When the Germans caught a Jewish boy hiding at the home of Romke Timmermans*, the head of the local Resistance movement, Wieger himself was forced to go into hiding. Later, in 1943, he contacted the LO and they ordered him to concentrate on supplying food coupons and so he distributed more than 30 coupons to Jews each month. Over and above this, he was instrumental in transporting Jews between hiding places. This was done at night, on bicycles, when he and Romke Timmermans broke the curfew to help save people. Wieger also became a hiding place “specialist,” advising people how to design and build shelters in their yards or under the ground for Jews to hide in during Nazi house searches.
On October 22, 1981, Yad Vashem recognized Wieger van den Bos as Righteous Among the Nations.
