On May 24, when the Jacobs family was due to report for deportation, Victor and his sister did not obey the order. Instead, they were taken separately into hiding. Their parents and brother were deported to Sobibor, where they perished. Victor was taken to the home of Aafje Kuyper-Prins, a widow who lived opposite his old house in Haarlem. Aafje received him warmly and treated him like her own child. Aafjes daughter Petronella (Nel) and her husband, Willem (Wim) Boon were also part of the household. At the end of 1943, Wim, who was active in the underground, was deported to a labor camp in Germany. He escaped and returned home in 1944. As Victor had lived in the same street before the war and all the neighbors knew him, he had to remain indoors. The Germans searched the house a few times, and on each occasion Victor quickly disappeared into a hiding place underneath the house. Aafje arranged for him to spend the summers in the countryside, at the homes of farmers. As he could not go to school, Aafje arranged for a private tutor to come to the house. She covered the expenses out of her own pocket until she received funding from the Resistance. In the hunger winter of 1944--1945, after Nel gave birth to a son, she shared the extra food rations for the baby with Victor. Victor stayed with them until the end of the war. On January 28, 1982, Yad Vashem recognized Aafje Kuyper-Prins, and Willem Boon and his wife, Petronella Boon-Kuyper, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
