The De Boers had no children of their own, and cared for Dodo as if she were their own daughter. During the war, Stein required serious surgery. Pieter and Gretje Tjeertes*, who were hiding Dodos parents, agreed to hide the little girl while Stein was hospitalized. As soon as Stein recovered, Dodo moved back into her home, where she remained until the end of the war. On March 5, 1984, Yad Vashem recognized Dirk de Boer and his wife, Stijntje de Boer-Vis, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
