Because the Germans searched the buildings in the area on a regular basis, it was necessary for non-Jews to pretend that the hideout was really their home. The Meulmans made sure that those hiding in the home had food and were secure. One of the people that came to the safe house was Gideon Yaari Kahn. Kahns childhood friend Henny Peeks* had found him a place to hide with Ivo Schöffer*, a university student involved in the underground. When Peeks was arrested, Kahn asked Schöffer to help him find another hiding place. Schöffer found him refuge at the student house run by the Meulmans and Mies Bunge*. On May 28, 1974, Yad Vashem recognized Jacobus Meulman and his sister, Maria Bent-Meulman, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
