With this conversation in mind, she returned to her husband to discuss the possibility of hiding the child and later that day offered to take care of five-year-old Rita. "Mr. and Mrs. de Bie had a beautiful home and other people were hiding there," Rita wrote in her testimony. "My parents didn't have to pay them anything. All Mr. and Mrs. de Bie wanted was to rescue as many people as they could." Over and above rescuing people, Jan and Theodora also worked for the underground and helped conceal weapons. By the end of the war, their lives were so endangered that Jan was himself forced to go into hiding. In the meantime, Theodora continued to run the household and care for her "guests." One day before liberation, under the impression that the war was over, Jan came out of hiding and went home. The Germans were waiting for him and, as soon as they spotted him, they shot him. Jan was so badly wounded that he had to undergo ten operations, remaining an invalid for the rest of his life. After the war, Jan and Theodora were honored with the Dutch Resistance Memorial Cross. On April 29, 1987, Yad Vashem recognized Jan de Bie and his wife, Theodora Catharina de Bie-van den Brink, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
