The Beuns suggested that the Baarses go into hiding but they refused. Later that year, when the Baarses and other Jews were forced to move to the eastern part of the city, Pieter and Cornelia stayed in touch. They brought them food when Jews were no longer allowed to move freely in the city and continued to urge them to go into hiding. Following a wave of deportations in October 1942, the Beuns picked up eight-year-old Shimshon from the Jewish quarter and took him first to their home and later that day to Pieters sister, where he stayed for two weeks. The Beuns eventually found a place for Shimshon at the house of Jan and Johanna Pels*. They also found hiding places for the Baarses daughter, Judith, and elder son, Eli, and they finally persuaded Akiva and Rachel to hide too. In addition to arranging hiding places for all five members of the Baars family, Pieter and Cornelia helped Josef Landau and his family find a hiding place. The Beuns belonged to the same underground group as the Ouweleen* and Hoefsmit* women and were actively involved in finding hiding places for Jewish children, providing false identity papers, and bringing money to foster families in need. They also had German army uniforms, which they used for many of their illegal activities. After the war, Rachel and Shimshon Baars immigrated to Israel and remained in contact with Pieter and Cornelia. Josef Landau also stayed in touch with the family, whom personal risk never deterred from their underground activities. On November 28, 1978, Yad Vashem recognized Pieter Beun and his wife, Anna Cornelia Beun-Boekwijt, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
