After three days Henriëtte was taken to an address in Zeist, Utrecht, where she was sheltered for three and a half months. Three weeks later Hijman, who was still living in the hotel, was told to take a train and to put a flower in the buttonhole of his jacket when he arrived at Steenwijk station. When he arrived, Jan Albert van der Heide, who was also wearing a flower in the lapel of his jacket, greeted him. After spending a few days with the van der Heide family, Hijman was taken to Sjoerd and Anne (Antje) Berg's farm in Wapserveen, Drenthe. Seven weeks later, Jan fetched Henriette from Zeist and she stayed in his house for a few days before being taken by him to join Hijman at the Bergs. The Sarluis were treated lovingly and Sjoerd and Anne did not accept money from the refugees. The Bergs did not tell their relatives that the guests on their farm were Jews, but rather that Hijman had been called up for work in Germany and did not wish to go. Whenever danger was anticipated, Hijman and Henriëtte hid in a specially constructed hideout. The Sarluis remained with the Bergs until after the liberation. During the many months the two couples lived together, they became very close friends. After the war, they continued to regard each other as family. Jan was caught by the Germans and sent to Dachau, where he died of typhus on January 30, 1945. On October 25, 1978, Yad Vashem recognized Sjoerd Berg and his wife, Anne Berg-Postma, and Jan Albert van der Heide as Righteous Among the Nations
