In the course of their activities Willem and Anneke saw how badly the Jewish immigrants from Germany and the non-Jewish opponents of the Nazi regime living in Holland were being treated. They tried to help and shelter as many people as possible, including Hans and Jeanette Jacoby, who stayed with the Bendelers from August 18, 1942, the day after their call-up for deportation, until December, when Willem was put on the Gestapo's wanted list and it became too dangerous for them. The Bendelers helped the Jacobys find a new address and, after a few short-term arrangements, they went to stay with Cees and Jans Mennes*, in Bergen op Zoom, North Brabant, on April 6, 1943. They stayed with Cornelis and Johanna Mennes until October 27, 1944, shortly after Bergen op Zoom was liberated. Cornelis and Johanna did everything they could keep Hans and Jeanette safe. In September 1944, because they were so close to the front line, they were all forced to evacuate to Cornelis and Johanna's grandparents' home in another section of the city. Willem was arrested in August 1943 and sent to the Vught concentration camp in December of that year. On November 29, 1979, Yad Vashem recognized Willem Gerrit Bendeler and his wife, Anna Willemina Jacoba Bendeler-Schnetz, and Cornelis Mennes and his wife, Johanna Adriana Mennes-Suijkerbuijk, as Righteous Among the Nations
